Best Email Marketing for Shopify in 2026: Ranked by Operating Burden, Not Features

The best email marketing platform for Shopify depends on who operates it. Shopify Email suits a founder sending occasionally, Omnisend and Sendlane suit a lean team, Klaviyo suits a dedicated lifecycle marketer, and Attentive adds SMS. Relvino is the autonomous option: it decides and sends per shopper with no flows to run.

We build the autonomous option, so read this as informed but interested. The six platforms below are described fairly, including where each one is the right answer and where it beats us. The ranking method is ours, and it is the point of the piece.

Why every “best email app for Shopify” list ranks the wrong thing

Search this phrase and you get two kinds of answer. The Shopify App Store sorts by installs and reviews, which measures popularity. The comparison blogs sort by feature count, which measures the length of the pricing page. Neither tells a $20–100M GMV brand the number that actually decides the choice: how many hours a month a human has to spend inside the tool to keep revenue flowing.

That number is not a footnote. A lifecycle stack with forty flows, a dozen segments and a standing A/B test queue can consume most of a marketer’s week. A simpler tool with a lower ceiling can cost two hours a month and leave money on the table. The right platform is the one whose monthly burden matches the team you actually have, and the feature list is only useful once you know that.

So the six platforms below are ranked from the lightest monthly burden to the heaviest, with an honest note on what each one gives up for that. The seventh option, at the end, removes the burden instead of trading it.

1. Shopify Email: the lightest burden, the lowest ceiling

Shopify Email, now sold inside the admin as Shopify Messaging with SMS and WhatsApp folded in, uses your store’s products and branding automatically and ships the basic automations a store needs to be not-broken: welcome, abandoned checkout, and a few post-purchase touches. There is nothing to integrate and almost nothing to learn.

The monthly burden is close to zero, which is exactly right for a founder who sends a campaign when there is something to say. The trade is depth. Segmentation is basic, the automation builder is shallow, and revenue reporting is thin compared with a dedicated platform. Brands feel the ceiling as soon as email revenue becomes material, which is why Shopify Email vs Klaviyo is the first comparison most of them run.

2. Mailchimp: general-purpose, light to run, not store-shaped

Mailchimp is the platform most operators already know, and its Shopify integration is good enough for campaigns, a welcome series and a cart reminder. The builder is friendly, the templates are strong, and the learning curve is short. Pricing is per contact stored, so the bill tracks list size rather than sends.

The burden is light because the tool is general rather than deep. The same reason makes it the wrong home for a brand whose revenue depends on browse, cart and repeat-purchase behavior; the ecommerce logic is workable but not native, and most brands that outgrow it move to something built for a store. We wrote up the cheaper alternatives to Mailchimp separately, because the shopping there is usually driven by the bill rather than the ceiling.

3. Omnisend: ecommerce-first, email and SMS in one, moderate burden

Omnisend was built for online stores. Email and SMS run inside the same automation, the prebuilt ecommerce workflows are genuinely useful on day one, and the reporting speaks in orders and revenue. For a lean team that wants store-shaped automation without a dedicated hire, it is often the right call, and it is usually cheaper than Klaviyo at the same list size.

The burden is moderate. The prebuilt flows get a store live quickly, but they still need to be tuned, tested and revisited, and the automation depth is a step below Klaviyo’s. Our fuller read is in Klaviyo vs Omnisend and, for brands leaving it, Omnisend alternatives.

4. Sendlane: unified email and SMS, priced per send, migration help included

Sendlane is a Klaviyo challenger built for ecommerce: email, SMS, forms and reviews in one platform, priced by send volume with unlimited contacts rather than per contact stored, with onboarding help and, on its higher tiers, migration handled by real people. For a brand whose Klaviyo bill grew with a list it never mails, the pricing model alone is a strong reason to look.

The burden once you are live is similar to Klaviyo’s, because the model is the same: a marketer designs and maintains the automations. What Sendlane removes is the setup cost, not the running cost. The full comparison, including what the migration offer implies, is in Sendlane vs Klaviyo.

5. Klaviyo: the deepest Shopify data, and the heaviest to run

Klaviyo is the default for a reason. Orders, browse, checkout and catalog data sync natively, segmentation acts on real behavior, the flow library covers every lifecycle moment, and reporting attributes dollars to every flow and campaign. If a dedicated lifecycle marketer is going to own email, Klaviyo gives that person the most to work with.

It is also the heaviest platform on this list to operate. The depth is a builder, and a builder only improves when somebody sits inside it: adding branches, pruning segments, running tests, revisiting last quarter’s flows. Pricing is per contact stored, so the list you are afraid to clean is a recurring line item. Both are described honestly in our Klaviyo review and Klaviyo pricing breakdown.

6. Attentive: SMS-first, a second stack to run

Attentive is the enterprise SMS platform, and it is excellent at the channel: compliance tooling, two-way conversations, high-volume sending. Brands usually run it alongside a dedicated email platform, which means two builders, two segment definitions and two sets of flows to keep in sync. That is the heaviest burden on the list, and the reason Klaviyo vs Attentive is so often really a question about whether to run two tools at all.

The cost no ranking prints: hours per month

Line the six up by monthly burden and a pattern shows. The platforms get better at ecommerce as they get heavier to run. Every step up the list buys depth by adding work: more segments to define, more flows to branch, more tests to read. The team shape follows the tool. A brand on Shopify Email has a founder who sends; a brand on Klaviyo and Attentive has a lifecycle team whose job is maintaining the machine.

The cost of that work rarely appears on the platform bill, which is why lists sorted by price miss it. A marketer’s week is often the largest line item in a lifecycle program, and the question the App Store cannot answer is what that week is for. If it is for tuning flows that plateaued a year ago, the platform is not the constraint. The paradigm is.

The seventh option: no flows to run

Relvino is built on a different idea. Instead of a builder a person operates, it runs an autonomous loop: Observe → Decide → Act. It watches live shopper signals from your store, decides the offer, timing and channel for that one shopper in about 80 milliseconds, and executes across email, SMS and on-site. You set guardrails once, including margin floors, send frequency, quiet hours and brand voice. After that, 100% of flows run without a human in the loop.

The engine is a Large Retail Model trained on 7M+ data points across 10K+ retailers and 1.78M shoppers, so it arrives knowing what works in your category rather than learning your store from zero. Brands replacing an incumbent see 2–6× ROI in 30 days and up to 10× revenue uplift year over year. On the specific incumbents above: 4× revenue uplift versus Klaviyo, 2× versus Mailchimp, 6× versus Attentive, and 5× ROI in 30 days versus Omnisend. The bill runs 3–7× cheaper than Klaviyo; see pricing.

The monthly burden is the point. Sulina Shop, a Shopify brand, saw 4× ROI after moving. Its founder Susan Jit put the operating difference plainly: “My old email tool charged a flat fee no matter what. Relvino focuses on highly targeted sends with fewer emails and a higher return.” POV Beauty: 2× fewer emails, same revenue. Fewer sends, no flow maintenance, and a team that spends its week on judgment rather than upkeep. Joshua Rockoff, CMO of Omni Retail Enterprises and a Relvino advisor, migrated four of his own brands and summarised it as “Next gen is Relvino.”

The seven options at a glance

  • Shopify Email · Best for: A founder who sends when there is news · Monthly operating burden: Near zero; low ceiling · Pricing meter: Included with Shopify, per send above the free tier
  • Mailchimp · Best for: A team that knows it and runs campaigns · Monthly operating burden: Light; ecommerce logic is not native · Pricing meter: Contacts stored
  • Omnisend · Best for: A lean team that wants store-shaped automation · Monthly operating burden: Moderate; prebuilt flows still need tuning · Pricing meter: Contacts stored
  • Sendlane · Best for: A brand leaving Klaviyo over the contact meter · Monthly operating burden: Similar to Klaviyo once live; migration help included · Pricing meter: Sends, unlimited contacts
  • Klaviyo · Best for: A dedicated lifecycle marketer · Monthly operating burden: Heavy; the depth is a builder · Pricing meter: Contacts stored
  • Attentive · Best for: Enterprise SMS alongside an email platform · Monthly operating burden: Heaviest; a second stack to keep in sync · Pricing meter: Messages sent
  • Relvino · Best for: A brand that wants revenue without the flow work · Monthly operating burden: No flow work; guardrails set once · Pricing meter: Weighted to outcomes, 3–7× cheaper than Klaviyo

So which should you choose?

A decision rule that holds up: pick the platform whose monthly burden matches the person who will carry it. A founder with no marketing hire should stay on Shopify Email until the ceiling hurts, then go to Omnisend. A lean team with someone who can give email a day a week is well served by Omnisend or Sendlane. A brand with a dedicated lifecycle marketer, or an agency running the account, gets the most from Klaviyo, and adds Attentive only when SMS volume justifies a second stack.

Then there is the common case at $20–100M GMV. The flows are built, the team is lean, and revenue from the stack has been flat for three quarters no matter how many tests run. Switching builders will not move that number, because the burden is the problem and every builder carries it. That is what autonomous decisioning is for. The technical migration takes about 30 minutes, and a 14-day pilot alongside the current platform shows the revenue difference before anything is cancelled. The wider field is mapped in Klaviyo competitors, and the AI features these platforms advertise are sorted out in AI email marketing tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

For a consumer brand selling its own products online, yes. For email specifically, the reason is data: every platform in this list reads orders, browse and checkout events straight from Shopify, so the store, not the email tool, is where the signal lives. The platform fee is real, but few brands under $100M GMV come out ahead owning that plumbing themselves.

What is the 80/20 rule for email marketing?

It is used two ways. The content version says roughly 80% of what you send should be useful or interesting and only 20% should be a direct promotion, so the list does not learn to ignore you. The revenue version says about 80% of email revenue tends to come from about 20% of subscribers, the engaged buyers who actually open and purchase. Both point the same direction: the value is in sending the right message to the small group who will act on it, not in sending more to everyone. That is also the logic behind autonomous decisioning, which decides per shopper instead of per list.

What email should I use for Shopify?

Match the tool to the person running it. Shopify Email if a founder sends occasionally and nobody owns lifecycle marketing. Omnisend or Sendlane if a lean team can give email part of a week. Klaviyo if a dedicated marketer or agency will build and maintain flows, with Attentive added once SMS volume earns a second platform. Relvino if the goal is lifecycle revenue without a builder to operate; it decides and sends per shopper inside guardrails you set once.

Does Shopify do email marketing?

Yes. Shopify Email, now packaged as Shopify Messaging, is a first-party app inside the Shopify admin that sends email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns and runs basic automations such as welcome, abandoned checkout and post-purchase messages, using your store’s branding and products automatically. It is the lightest option to run and the right starting point for a small store. Its segmentation, automation depth and reporting are thinner than a dedicated platform’s, which is why growing brands usually move to Klaviyo, Omnisend or an autonomous platform as revenue from email becomes material.

How long does it take to migrate from Klaviyo to Relvino?

The technical cutover takes about 30 minutes: authenticate the sending domain, install the Shopify app, and historical data ingests on its own. Nothing is rebuilt, because there are no flows to recreate. Revenue runs on a different clock. Run a 14-day pilot with the current platform paused rather than cancelled, and compare the two side by side before making the call.
